Club Blitz Championship 2024

The second running of our annual Club Blitz Championship was held on 6 June. This was an exciting evening of fast-paced chess over 8 rounds with a total of 20 participants.

The evening began with the prize giving for our recently completed Rapid Matrix Tournament, which ran from January to the end of May. The tournament was won by Daniel Seaton with a score of 19.5/24, with the highest-placed junior being Aditya Vikram Sengupta, who was also the runner-up in the event. A special prize was awarded to Joan Dunstan for the excellent spirit with which she participated in the tournament, ultimately playing the most number of games out of all 36 participants.

The Club Blitz Championship then got underway, with last year’s champion Colin Purdon returning to defend his crown. There were many exciting and back-and-forth games, and all participated in a great spirit.

All was to play for going into the final round, with four players still in with a chance of winning the title: Colin Purdon, Daniel Seaton, Aditya Vikram Sengupta, and Steve Harley. Ultimately after 8 rounds, Colin and Daniel tied for the lead with a score of 6.5/8. After some discussion between them, it was agreed to decide the title by having a playoff game, with the winner being awarded the trophy.

The playoff was a tense and exciting match, which remained even for quite some time before Colin then gained the advantage. Daniel then fought back, eventually achieving a big advantage going into the endgame. In time trouble, he missed some chances and the game ultimately ended in a draw by repetition.

After all this, Colin and Daniel agreed to share the title and were duly crowned Camberley Chess Club joint Blitz Champions for 2024. Their names will be engraved on the trophy in due course.

Many thanks go to Daniel and Thomas West for organising and running the event and to all who took part and made the evening a success.

Our next event will be the annual Club Championship, which will run over 6 rounds from 22 June to 11 July.
